Little Red Riding Hood

The Grimm brothers, The Brothers Grimm, Jacob (1785–1863) and Wilhelm Karl (1786–1859), are not called grim for nothing. The original text seemed contain parts not intended for children but presented in a childlike manner. I am not sure how accurate the story below is to the original books but it is still good reading.

Once upon a time there was a dear little girl who was loved by every one who looked at her, but most of all by her grandmother, and there was nothing that she would not have given to the child. Once she gave her a little cap of red velvet, which suited her so well that she would never wear anything else. So she was always called Little Red Riding Hood.

One day her mother said to her, "Come, Little Red Riding Hood, here is a piece of cake and a bottle of wine. Take them to your grandmother, she is ill and weak, and they will do her good. Set out before it gets hot, and when you are going, walk nicely and quietly and do not run off the path, or you may fall and break the bottle, and then your grandmother will get nothing. And when you go into her room, don't forget to say, good-morning, and don't peep into every corner before you do it."
I will take great care, said Little Red Riding Hood to her mother, and gave her hand on it.

The grandmother lived out in the wood, half a league from the village, and just as Little Red Riding Hood entered the wood, a wolf met her. Little Red Riding Hood did not know what a wicked creature he was, and was not at all afraid of him.

"Good-day, Little Red Riding Hood," said he.

"Thank you kindly, wolf."

"Whither away so early, Little Red Riding Hood?"

"To my grandmother's."

"What have you got in your apron?"

"Cake and wine. Yesterday was baking-day, so poor sick grandmother is to have something good, to make her stronger."

"Where does your grandmother live, Little Red Riding Hood?"

"A good quarter of a league farther on in the wood. Her house stands under the three large oak-trees, the nut-trees are just below. You surely must know it," replied Little Red Riding Hood.

The wolf thought to himself, "What a tender young creature. What a nice plump mouthful, she will be better to eat than the old woman. I must act craftily, so as to catch both." So he walked for a short time by the side of Little Red Riding Hood, and then he said, "see Little Red Riding Hood, how pretty the flowers are about here. Why do you not look round. I believe, too, that you do not hear how sweetly the little birds are singing. You walk gravely along as if you were going to school, while everything else out here in the wood is merry."

Little Red Riding Hood raised her eyes, and when she saw the sunbeams dancing here and there through the trees, and pretty flowers growing everywhere, she thought, suppose I take grandmother a fresh nosegay. That would please her too. It is so early in the day that I shall still get there in good time. And so she ran from the path into the wood to look for flowers. And whenever she had picked one, she fancied that she saw a still prettier one farther on, and ran after it, and so got deeper and deeper into the wood.

Meanwhile the wolf ran straight to the grandmother's house and knocked at the door.

"Who is there?"

"Little Red Riding Hood," replied the wolf. "She is bringing cake and wine. Open the door."

"Lift the latch," called out the grandmother, "I am too weak, and cannot get up."

The wolf lifted the latch, the door sprang open, and without saying a word he went straight to the grandmother's bed, and devoured her. Then he put on her clothes, dressed himself in her cap, laid himself in bed and drew the curtains.

Little Red Riding Hood, however, had been running about picking flowers, and when she had gathered so many that she could carry no more, she remembered her grandmother, and set out on the way to her.

She was surprised to find the cottage-door standing open, and when she went into the room, she had such a strange feeling that she said to herself, oh dear, how uneasy I feel to-day, and at other times I like being with grandmother so much.

She called out, "Good morning," but received no answer. So she went to the bed and drew back the curtains. There lay her grandmother with her cap pulled far over her face, and looking very strange.

"Oh, grandmother," she said, "what big ears you have."

"The better to hear you with, my child," was the reply.

"But, grandmother, what big eyes you have," she said.

"The better to see you with, my dear."

"But, grandmother, what large hands you have."

"The better to hug you with."

"Oh, but, grandmother, what a terrible big mouth you have."

"The better to eat you with."

And scarcely had the wolf said this, than with one bound he was out of bed and swallowed up Little Red Riding Hood.

When the wolf had appeased his appetite, he lay down again in the bed, fell asleep and began to snore very loud. The huntsman was just passing the house, and thought to himself, how the old woman is snoring. I must just see if she wants anything.

So he went into the room, and when he came to the bed, he saw that the wolf was lying in it. "Do I find you here, you old sinner," said he. "I have long sought you."

Then just as he was going to fire at him, it occurred to him that the wolf might have devoured the grandmother, and that she might still be saved, so he did not fire, but took a pair of scissors, and began to cut open the stomach of the sleeping wolf.

When he had made two snips, he saw the Little Red Riding Hood shining, and then he made two snips more, and the little girl sprang out, crying, "Ah, how frightened I have been. How dark it was inside the wolf."

And after that the aged grandmother came out alive also, but scarcely able to breathe. Little Red Riding Hood, however, quickly fetched great stones with which they filled the wolf's belly, and when he awoke, he wanted to run away, but the stones were so heavy that he collapsed at once, and fell dead.

Then all three were delighted. The huntsman drew off the wolf's skin and went home with it. The grandmother ate the cake and drank the wine which Little Red Riding Hood had brought, and revived, but Little Red Riding Hood thought to herself, as long as I live, I will never by myself leave the path, to run into the wood, when my mother has forbidden me to do so.

It is also related that once when Little Red Riding Hood was again taking cakes to the old grandmother, another wolf spoke to her, and tried to entice her from the path. Little Red Riding Hood, however, was on her guard, and went straight forward on her way, and told her grandmother that she had met the wolf, and that he had said good-morning to her, but with such a wicked look in his eyes, that if they had not been on the public road she was certain he would have eaten her up. "Well," said the grandmother, "we will shut the door, that he may not come in."

Soon afterwards the wolf knocked, and cried, "open the door, grandmother, I am Little Red Riding Hood, and am bringing you some cakes."

But they did not speak, or open the door, so the grey-beard stole twice or thrice round the house, and at last jumped on the roof, intending to wait until Little Red Riding Hood went home in the evening, and then to steal after her and devour her in the darkness. But the grandmother saw what was in his thoughts. In front of the house was a great stone trough, so she said to the child, take the pail, Little Red Riding Hood. I made some sausages yesterday, so carry the water in which I boiled them to the trough. Little Red Riding Hood carried until the great trough was quite full. Then the smell of the sausages reached the wolf, and he sniffed and peeped down, and at last stretched out his neck so far that he could no longer keep his footing and began to slip, and slipped down from the roof straight into the great trough, and was drowned. But Little Red Riding Hood went joyously home, and no one ever did anything to harm her again.

Short Updates

This paragraph will just be about 'American Idol'. Last post I expressed that David Cook should win it and he did. My only disappointment was he was not at his best. Remember when he sang Billy Jean, Hello and Always be my Baby? Although this would be more for the last song he sang but you would agree with me is that he was not consistent.

I had my car rewired yesterday. It took a whole shift 8.5 hours to finish it. I had converted my engine from AFM to MAP so I had to change my ECU as well. They found some leaks around the engine and had to replace some gaskets and oil seals. It was expensive, cost me more than 20k so far it was well worth it. I had it done my Autotech at Quirino Avenue. Love the response so far.

American Idol

American Idol is down to 3 finalists. Before the show ends I want to say my piece. I think the winner has been eliminated weeks ago. I do feel that Michael Johns is the best singer of them all. Too bad that he fell out of the race early. It is a singing contest right? I started to loose interest in the program after he got booted out. I still see it but I have missed a few episodes from then until now or if I get to watch it, I skip some. The problem when you open up voting to different denomination is that the winner is not always decided by its talent but appeal to the masses. It is not bad but sometimes we miss the point. It is now a popularity contest. Yes, I know I am no expert at singing but compare him to the other contestants? I know you will have a different choice based on your own perception. Unless you are an expert on the subject matter, I guess I have proven my point.

The final 3:

Syesha Mercado. This girl is lucky. She survived being in the bottom 3 many times. I do think that she should be out tomorrow night. Give her credit picking up her performance late in the game. Not that impressive though. She sings well and performs well but not that impressive.

David Archuleta. He is a good voice, and thats it. You have to like the quality. I do have a problem with him. He is boring. I thought that in his every performance he sounds the same. Fast, happy or lively songs does not fit him. I guess because we have identified him singing slow ballads or his best performances where with these slow songs. If Jason Castro made it this far, he and David would have been proof that this is a popularity contest. Although Jason rode on his popularity more than David. Let us give David credit for the quality of his voice. But I do not think that he should win this year. He may win it but he should not be the one.

David Cook. This guy has improved from day one. Among the 3, he has voice as his weakest asset. He is a performer and his interpretations has made up for his flaws. His creativeness is what brought him to this point. He has that swagger, since the first weeks. If you recall him telling Simon that it is the viewers that decide who should be eliminated and not Simon, or something like that. If he wins he deserves it. If he looses (assuming that there will be no mishaps for each of them), again I have proven my point.

People Do Come and Go

In case I have not yet mentioned I am a Manager at a Call Center. For those who are familiar with the industry I guess you are very much aware on the turnover of employees. My company is different from others. People here belong more to the 'masses'. When it comes to fashion I guess we are more into the college look, if you know what I mean. I have been working here for six years now. Yes six years. As a call center employee only a few have stayed in one place and as a manager it is a rare find!

Call it comfort zone but I find to love my stay. I know my job well but still not results meets my expectations perfectly. That adds to the excitement. There are more of us here that stayed for more than 6 years. Collectively, that is even an accomplishment. I would say there are around 40 of us still in the company by the end of MAY with 6 years tenure and up (a few months ahead of us). What is also interesting is that we are part of the start-up team. I started out as an agent by the way.

The department that I am managing currently has 9 staff including 2 assistant managers. We have been together for more than 2 years now. Unit one of us decides to leave. As a consolation she is not leaving us for another call center or company but for abroad. I thought that I could maintain the same people at the end of the year but people do come and go. They have their needs and may seek better opportunities elsewhere. I wonder when will my time come? Incidentally I got a phone call from 'Jobstreet' yesterday and immediately had an initial interview with them. Our General Manager caught me on the phone but I do not think that he realized that I was having my interview. I do not really mind it but out of respect to him, I should have done a good job of hiding it.

I admire those who take the risk and gamble. I may have done the same if only I was single. She left us because she was supporting her family. Her mom, brother, sister, niece, etc. With that she really needs all financial help she can get. It would be unselfish if I did not show to her that she could not leave. In the first place her job can be endorsed and with a family like that to support she needs to take the opportunity. I wish her luck. I do hope that she gets a job. She is a hardworking staff. They all are.

When the time comes for me to leave, what would be my reason? I wonder?

Clashes In The Workplace

When you ask graduates, when is their happiest moment some would answer graduation day or high school. For those married, probably their wedding or after the delivery of their first child or children. Those who are about to spend the last few days in office after submitting their resignations I noticed are in a good happy mood. At least most of them or probably it is only true in our company?

No would say that their happiest moment was in the workplace. If they do say, they are those who are about to resign, get a lot better position or happy to get the job because it is their first or because they got their first paycheck to help their parents. I doubt that these people would make up a quarter of the workforce.

If your happiest time was during work then something may be wrong. Get a life!

Work, means labor, task, or duty that is one's accustomed means of livelihood (www.merriam-webster.com). Now were is the fun in that? Well you need to work to have fun or just to live your life the way you want to or towards it. If what your are doing for a living is monotonous or you just keep on doing the same thing over and over again for months and years you get to a point where you ask if this is my purpose in life or if there is something out there or better yet I need to get out of here. If was not only for the salary to sustain your existence for sure you wouldn't hesitate to leave.

Some people already have established a comfort zone that they wouldn't want to leave. Come on! Something has got to give. Either the company or you. We are only human and we have our limits, a boiling point if you will.

You know what makes it hard to stay on a job that you like and provides good returns? The people around you. Your boss, colleagues, subordinates and others. Different personalities, different philosophies and point of view. Those in the manufacturing or those who deal with mostly machines are a little better of than the likes of me. Like they say, different folks have different strokes. I am not saying that should not be yourself. Just show to them a side of you that will put you on their good side. There is no way of avoiding those with personalities that does not mesh with yours. You have to adapt. I do not believe that in order to get on someone's good side or to avoid confrontation you have to do what they do. If they go out during Fridays for a drink, you do not have to do that. If it is how to do a job correctly then you need to follow. A standard is different. If to celebrate something important like an acquisition of an account then fine but you have to deal with the temptation of doing it again. It is not like you. If you found out that it is what you like, that is another story. Bottom line you do not do (always) what the Romans do.

Clashes. Clashes of ideas and personalities are inevitable where I work. Our primary resource are people. Which mean we get a lot of these. Some would not want to confront others. Me, I go at it. Sometimes head on and sometimes at an 'angle'. There are some that you do want to avoid. If you did something wrong then admit it and learn from it. Do not justify what you did or make excuses. It does not look good on you. I have seen people do it and may develop into a habit if you get away with it many times. There are those who think they are right but they are clearly out of the line. Now that is the time a confront. Head on or at an 'angle'? That would depend on the person and circumstance. The urgency of the situation will call for the direct approach and 'attack' him head on to prove a point or to get the job right. At an angle because he has a point but we need to straighten him out or you need to collaborate.

The Work. If you think that you have reached a point that what you are doing is repetitive, by all means look for a new job, either openings in other departments or other company. You have to take care of yourself. Imagine if you would be doing the same thing on and on for 5 years or more, you are punishing yourself! Check yourself first. You might be doing the same things over and over again that you are not going to the next level. A sharp knife when used to cut again and again would end up blunt sooner and later. The length of time would vary on the items that you cut. Same goes for our brain. If you torture yourself with the same things over and over then you deprive yourself with stimulants that should be helping you grow. Who does not encounter problems in the workplace? If you have an email that is bothering you or paper work that is doing the same. Step away from the desk and head to the water dispenser or somewhere else to get you mind off for a while and get some perspective. It is hard to get things done if you are clouded.

I think it is time for me to step away from my laptop and take some rest. It is still the best cure from all this. Next time, I will add more related thoughts on this. Till then.

Manic Monday

MONDAY AGAIN!!!!
After what happened yesterday, I want to make up for the rest I should have taken last weekend. I have a lot of items on my plate that I have to go work. A lot of people would be looking for me if I did not show up.
I start the day with my usual shower, watch over baby while my wife takes her shower, breakfast, brush my teeth before driving off to work.
Seemed like any ordinary Monday when suddenly it all happened again. MY CAR STALLED ON ME AGAIN!!! Exact thing happened and I could not start it. First thing I did was push it on the side then checked the fuse. As expected, busted! After removing it and putting a new one, blew on me after turning the key.
I had my wife and my mom take a cab to work while I wait for my dad. I told him to get an electrician to fix the problem. I had a feeling that this is some wiring issue. I removed the car's ECU and inserted another fuse......guess what same thing. This just makes my theory grow stronger.
Dad finally arrived after 20 minutes with the electrician on his jeep. He opened up the conduits and like a doctor dissected all its nerves to get to the root of all this. While he was doing that I took the chance to get home and got rid of my office attire and wore casual. I have two pockets, one for my 2 phones (company and personal) while the other for my wallet.
We have a jeep. It is a makeshift Asian Utility Vehicle common in Manila. It is an old one. It has a Toyota 1L diesel engine. Very economical as we have changed oil on this thing one every century. You could not close the window on this one. The mechanism is busted.
I got back to the scene and looks like they may have found the problem. It is a busted oxygen sensor in the exhaust. The circuit in which it runs through is shorted, thus killing more fuse than I did for half of my existence for the past 24 hours.
We are running low on electrical tape. I took the jeep to get some tape. I knew we had some at home. I checked the drawers and did not find any. I took two thousand from out fund kept in our room and put it in my wallet. I checked on baby who was pretty much contented. She somehow lessened the stress. I guess that's what babies are for. Then I drove off.
When I got to the hardware, I parked up beside it, near their truck. I have not yet shut down the engine as the truck was moving. Seeing that I was not in its way I turned off the engine and walked towards the store. I already asked for the tapes when I felt that I do not have my wallet. I walked back to the jeep and did not find it there.... looked around and did not see it fall down. I did saw a man as I was nearing my jeep but could not find it anywhere...... THIS CANNOT BE HAPPENING TO ME!!!!
I went back home and looked around and hope that I will find my wallet. Our maid thought they saw me holding it in my hand. This means I could have only left it in the jeep.... with the WINDOWS OPEN!!!! My license was there!!! I took two thousand two hundered pesos from our fund then drove back to the store hoping that I may still see it. On my way dad called up to tell me that the car was running and we need the tape.
I got the tape but not the wallet and told dad abut the bad news. The car was running fine but I am still driving without my wallet and license.
After lunch, I changed my clothes and went to LTO to get a new license. This is the Philippines after all. There were fixers everywhere. I got my affidavit of loss and it cost me a hundred. I got inside the compound some people were following me offering to speed up the process. I hate this system, but after seeing the number of people in line I paid him. It cost me an extra hundred but it did not gave you imminuty to the wait time.
I was told that if I am called by the cashier, I just tell her that all is taken care of by "Sir Tony". I guess he is an officer in the licensing area.
I do not get the services of fixers but after what has happened to me today... there is no way in hell that I am spending the remaineder of the day waiting. Almost an hour I got what I came for. Along with those who have waited twice and more than my wait time.
The government says they will crack down on corruption. Look around your agencies and bureau. You have fixers trace them up and you get the corrupt officers. I did not need to ask but I got the name. I could have asked more but do not waste more of my valuable time.
Enough of that! I hope that I get to write good stuff for my next blogs.

Uneventful Sunday

I just got home with my car. Yep, you read right, with my car and not on it. We were towed.

We were supposed to go on a trip to the province. Just 80+ km away from the city. We were just 5 km away from our place at Tandang Sora when my car stalled.

We were running a good 60km along Edsa (its a Sunday) when I noticed the RPM dropped. I lowered the gear and hoped that the momentum would jump start the car but nothing happened. Once we stopped, electricity seemed OK as every turn of the switch seemed to try to revive the engine. Pushing to jump start did not help.

Tomorrow, I will have a mechanic check this one out. I have a feeling it could be on the fuel line.
